Management of Hypertensive Elderly in Clinical Dentistry

Abstract
Objective: To review the published evidence that related with management of hypertensive elderly in clinical dentistry.

Methods: We reviewed articles published up until August 2011, on hypertension among elderly and management in clinical dentistry. Articles were identified via Medline searches.

Results: Hypertension is a common clinical problem in the elderly worldwide. Dentistry has played an important role in the detection of patients with hypertension. Patients found to have high blood pressure at or beyond defined levels should be referred for a medical diagnosis and indicated treatment.

Conclusion: Hypertensive elderly patients are at high risk for significant complications such as stroke, heart disease, kidney disease and retinal disease. Dental health care workers should be able to recognize risk factors associated hypertension affect the provision of dental care. In addition, increased numbers of medically compromised elderly patients are seeking dental treatment who should have their blood pressure monitored during the more stressful dental procedures. This article reviews the recent advances in the dental and medical management of hypertension especially in elderly population. It is important for dentists to be aware of hypertension in relation to the dental practice.
